Castillo de Clavijo
Clavijo, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Clavijo is a 9th-10th century fortress of probable Muslim origin dramatically perched on a rocky outcrop above the village of Clavijo in La Rioja, northern Spain, strategically controlling the Iregua and Leza river valleys.
Famous for the legendary Battle of Clavijo in 844, where Christian forces under Ramiro I of Asturias supposedly triumphed against superior Muslim troops with the miraculous intervention of Saint James (Santiago Matamoros), the site's true historical role involved repeated conquests during the Reconquista by Navarrese and Castilian kings.
Featuring adapted walls with six semicircular towers and a rectangular keep tower around a rock-carved cistern, the ruins offer panoramic vistas and represent La Rioja's frontier defense architecture on the Route of the Castles.
