Castillo de Coria
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Coria, also known as the Castle of the Dukes of Alba, is a 15th-century Gothic-Renaissance fortress in the historic city of Coria, Cáceres province, Extremadura, Spain, built on the site of a 12th-century Knights Templar fortification northwest of the Roman walls.
Commissioned by García Álvarez de Toledo, first Duke of Alba and Marquis of Coria, its elegant keep tower was designed by architect Juan Carrera between 1473 and 1478 using precisely cut granite ashlars in an irregular pentagonal layout with battlements, a circular casemate tower, moat, and Late-Gothic Elizabethan-style cornices symbolizing aristocratic power.
Declared a Spanish Cultural Heritage site in 1988, it offers panoramic views of the city and Alagón River meadows, forming part of Coria's well-preserved medieval and Roman legacy.
