Castillo de Cortegana
Cortegana, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Cortegana is a 13th-century Gothic-Mudéjar fortress in Cortegana, Huelva province, Spain, built by order of King Sancho IV as part of the "Banda Gallega" defenses to protect Seville from Portuguese incursions during the Reconquista. Featuring an outer walled enclosure with square towers that likely housed the original village and an inner fortress with a deep well, compact 16-meter Torre del Homenaje keep from the Catholic Monarchs era, and vaulted chambers, it suffered major damage from the 1755 Lisbon earthquake before 1970s restoration. Declared a Cultural Interest site in 1985, this well-preserved landmark now offers guided tours with panoramic Sierra de Aracena views and medieval exhibits.
