Verified Castillo de Dos Hermanas (Ruinas)

Navahermosa, Spain, Spain

The Castillo de Dos Hermanas, or Castle of the Two Sisters, is a ruined medieval fortress located about 3 km from Navahermosa in Toledo province, Spain, perched on one of two prominent rocky peaks known as the "Peñas Hermanas" separated by the Marlín stream.

Dating to the 11th-12th century, it originated as either a Templar structure built over a pre-Roman castro or an Arab bastion during the Reconquista, housing 20-30 soldiers and families while protecting the nearby village of Dos Hermanas populated by shepherds and beekeepers.

Key owners included Alfonso Téllez in 1210, Archbishop Rodrigo Ximénez de Rada in 1222, and later King Fernando III who sold it to Toledo in 1246; by 1444, with the area pacified, the garrison disbanded, leading residents to relocate to Navahermosa and leaving the irregular, narrow-plan castle—featuring a pointed-arch door, three façades, and rampart holes—to fall into advanced ruin. Today, its deteriorated remains offer panoramic views of the Montes de Toledo and olive groves.
