Castillo de Dúrcal
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Dúrcal is a pre-Nasrid Muslim fortress atop El Castillejo hill at 800 meters above sea level, about 2 km southwest of Dúrcal in Granada's Lecrín Valley, Spain, originally built for surveillance over the fertile vega and key passage between Granada and the coast. Ordered destroyed by Ferdinand the Catholic in April 1491 during the Reconquista's final stages to prevent Nasrid resistance, its irregular polygonal perimeter once featured multiple walls, a visible tower, aljibe cistern, and recessed gate on the steep slope, though only fragmented ruins remain today. Archaeological ceramics confirm Nasrid-era use despite earlier origins, with no recorded role in the 1568-71 Morisco War, now accessible via hikes from San Blas Hermitage near the thermal springs.
