Castillo de Escalona
Escalona, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Escalona in Escalona, Toledo province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, originated as a Roman villa and Arab tower before its Christian reconstruction in the 12th century to defend against almorávide and almohade invasions along the Alberche River.
Enlarged by Infante Don Juan Manuel and dramatically expanded in the 15th century by Constable Álvaro de Luna into a lavish Gothic-Mudejar palace-fortress with eight massive albarran towers, a drawbridge, parade ground, and ornate columnar patio, it hosted royal festivities symbolizing Luna's power until his downfall.
Damaged by sieges, fires, and French troops in the Peninsular War, the ruins—recently acquired by the town hall in 2024—preserve their dual military-residential legacy as a declared historic monument overlooking scenic countryside.
