Castillo de Eskibel
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Eskibel, also known as Castillo de Gomecha, consists of the ruins of an old fortified watchtower in Eskibel village, part of Vitoria-Gasteiz's Southwestern Rural Zone in Álava province, Basque Country, Spain.
Situated 7.5 km southwest of the city in a small valley amid the Mountains of Vitoria, this medieval defensive structure witnessed key battles during the Spanish War of Independence in the early 19th century and the Second Carlist War when Carlists besieged Vitoria.
The sparsely populated area, now down to just two residents as of 2023, preserves these remnants alongside the ruins of the Church of San Lorenzo, from which a medieval Virgin of Eskibel statue was salvaged for Vitoria-Gasteiz's Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art.
