Castillo de Fatetar
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Fatetar is a medieval fortress atop Monte del Castillo overlooking the town of Espera in Cádiz province, Andalusia, Spain, with roots tracing back to pre-Roman Turdetani and Iberian fortifications possibly overlaid by Roman and Visigothic structures. Caliph Abderramán III ordered its construction as an Arab castle in 914 AD, appointing Yamil Uqba al Balawi as alcaide to guard a key communication route, before it changed hands to Christians around 1264 following conquests by Alfonso X amid the Reconquista. Serving as a frontier stronghold blending Moorish and later Christian defenses, it was granted to nobles like Fernán Pérez Ponce de León in 1304 and now stands in ruins, protected as an archaeological asset offering panoramic views.
