Castillo de Gérgal
Gérgal, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Gérgal is a robust 16th-century fortress atop a hill overlooking the village of Gérgal in Almería province, Andalusia, Spain, likely built on earlier Muslim foundations from the 13th-14th centuries possibly dating back to Roman or Iberian times. Donated by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492 to Alonso de Cárdenas, Master of Santiago, for his role in the Granada War, it served the Counts of Puebla de Maestre as a defensive stronghold against 16th-century Berber pirate raids aided by local Moriscos, featuring circular corner towers adapted for artillery, a semicircular bastion, thick walls, a grain storage pósito, and underground passages rumored to link a nearby older hilltop fort. A key site in the 1568 Morisco Rebellion where governor Francisco Puertocarrero massacred Christians before rebels fled to mountains, it was burned, rebuilt in the 17th century for repopulation, and used until the 18th century as a granary before partial ruin, now restored with visible medieval traits amid scenic rambla views.
