Castillo de Giribaile
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Giribaile is a ruined 12th-century Islamic fortress near Guadalén in Vilches, Jaén province, Spain, strategically positioned on a plateau at about 500 meters above sea level to control the Guadalimar river valley and ancient routes like the Vía Heráclea. Built atop an Iberian oppidum from the 4th century BC that declined under Roman conquest, it features remnants of two square towers, walls of rough stone and tapial, and a large vaulted cistern amid archaeological layers including pottery and mining ovens. Passed to Christian hands after the 1212 Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa and granted to Gil Bayle de Cabrera in 1292—who legendarily inscribed territorial boasts on its facade—it later decayed into abandonment, its name derived from its lord.
