CASTILLO DE GORDON
Spain, Spain
CASTILLO DE GORDÓN is an ancient Spanish fortress located in Los Barrios de Gordón, part of La Pola de Gordón municipality in León province.
Built by Alfonso III of Asturias, it played key roles in royal rebellions and defenses, including resisting Almanzor's 997 siege alongside sister castles Luna and Arbolio, before being destroyed in 1217 by order of the León king and definitively razed in 1811 during the Peninsular War.
Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Bernesga river valley and the León-Gijón route, its remains evoke León's turbulent medieval history of noble tenures and strategic control.
