Castillo de Grajal de Campos
Grajal de Campos, Spain, Spain
The Castillo de Grajal de Campos is a well-preserved 16th-century artillery castle in the village of Grajal de Campos, León province, Spain, built on the ruins of a 10th-century fortress first documented in 967.
Commissioned by Hernando de Vega around 1517 and completed by his son Juan de Vega by 1521, it features a square layout measuring 73 meters per side with four corner towers for heavy cannons, sloped walls for defense against artillery, and a low profile on a hillock, making it Spain's first purpose-built gunpowder fortress.
Declared a National Monument in 1931, it remains privately owned by the Duke of Alburquerque, with its interior dismantled but accessible via guided tours despite needing restoration.
