Castillo de Granadilla
Granadilla, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Granadilla is a medieval fortress atop a slate hill in the ghost village of Granadilla, Cáceres province, Extremadura, Spain, founded by Muslims in the 9th century as a strategic outpost along the Vía de la Plata route.
Conquered by Fernando II in 1160, it was fully walled by Christians, with the current castle built between 1473 and 1478 by the 1st Duke of Alba, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, over earlier Almohad foundations, featuring a circular muralla, square towers, and a prominent keep.
Part of an abandoned historic-artistic site since the 1960s due to reservoir construction, its well-preserved ruins draw visitors for panoramic views and insights into Reconquista-era defense amid restored traditional homes.
