Castillo de Guzman el Bueno
Tarifa, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno in Tarifa, Cádiz province, Spain, originated as a 10th-century alcazaba built by Caliph Abderramán III to control the Strait of Gibraltar's strategic entrance. Conquered by Sancho IV in 1292 and entrusted to Alonso Pérez de Guzmán—who earned his title "el Bueno" by defying a 1296 siege, reportedly hurling his dagger when enemies threatened his captive son—it features trapezoidal walls adapting to the hill, an octagonal albarrana tower, and later Renaissance additions. Restored in the 17th century against Berber pirates, adapted for artillery in the 18th, and vital in the 1811-1812 Peninsular War defense, it remains a well-preserved national monument dominating the southernmost European promontory.
