Castillo de Herrera del Duque
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Herrera del Duque is a 15th-16th century fortress overlooking the town of Herrera del Duque in Badajoz province, Extremadura, Spain, with roots in Almohad Islamic construction later rebuilt during the Christian Reconquista.
The square-plan structure features thick walls, circular corner towers topped with battlements, a vaulted cistern, prison cells, and Gothic inner elements like arches, lacking a central keep but adapted to rugged terrain for defense.
Associated with the powerful Sotomayor family who used it to consolidate seigneurial power, the ruins preserve archaeological traces of stables, parade grounds, and a Moorish brick arch gateway amid layers of Roman and medieval history.
