Castillo de Hornachos
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Hornachos is a 13th-century fortress of Almohad Muslim origin located on a high rocky hill overlooking the town of Hornachos in Badajoz province, Extremadura, Spain.
Captured in 1234 by Pedro González, Master of the Order of Santiago, the site underwent significant Christian reconstruction that preserved its outer perimeter while adding defensive reinforcements, a Tower of Homage, almenas, and comfort features like a chapel, aljibe, and caballerizas.
Utilizing tapial, mampostería, and granite construction techniques with visible mechinales from encofrados, the dual-enclosure stronghold now mostly ruined with its exterior circuit lost dominated regional surveillance until population growth led to its abandonment.
