Castillo de Jimena de la Frontera
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Jimena de la Frontera crowns San Cristóbal hill in Jimena de la Frontera, Cádiz province, Andalusia, Spain, originating from pre-Roman Oba settlement ruins with Roman, Byzantine, and Visigothic layers overlaid by 13th-century Nasrid Muslim fortifications amid the Reconquista frontier. Reformed under Almohad and later Nasrid rule, it features an irregular elongated muralla with 14 atalayas including the prominent 13-meter circular Torre del Homenaje hiding a prior polygonal base, Torre del Reloj albarrana with acodado access, aljibes, and a Roman-era puerta-bastión, all blending defensive circuits for guarnición control. Captured by Christians in 1430-1431 then retaken until 1465 integration into Castile, it later housed French troops in 1810 and was declared a national monument in 1931, preserving its role as a key Granada border bastion.
