Castillo de Jubera (Ruinas)
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Jubera (Ruinas) consists of the atmospheric ruins of a 10th-century fortress of Muslim origin crowning a steep hill above the village of Jubera in the Jubera Valley, La Rioja region, northern Spain, with the river acting as a natural moat below.
First mentioned in 9th-century documents, it gained prominence in the 13th century when Alfonso VIII of Castile ceded it to Sancho of Navarre as truce collateral, later belonging to Álvaro de Luna in the 15th century and remodeled during the First Carlist War.
The site features three adaptive walled enclosures with cylindrical turrets, defensive barbicans, a rectangular addition, and mysterious internal caves, now blending into the mountainside amid mid-mountain landscapes near the Leza-Jubera-Cidacos Biosphere Reserve.
