Castillo de la Arguijuela de Arriba
Cáceres, Spain, Spain
Castillo de la Arguijuela de Arriba stands as a 16th-century medieval palace-castle located about 12 kilometers south of Cáceres in Extremadura, Spain.
Constructed between 1513 and 1550 by Don Diego de Ovando y Cáceres, with contributions from architect Pedro de Larrea, it features a rectangular layout around a spacious square courtyard, defensive battlements, five round corner towers, one prismatic tower, a porticoed gallery, watchtower, and arrow slits.
The main entrance bears the stone coat of arms of Ovando and his first wife, Teresa Rol de la Cerda, funded partly by her dowry of 1,000 gold ducats. Privately owned today, it operates as a rural lodging with five exclusive rooms amid olive groves and a chapel used for events like weddings, and it served during the Spanish Civil War as a training site for German Panzer tank crews led by Wilhelm von Thoma.
