Castillo de la Concepción crowns Concepción Hill in Cartagena, Murcia region of Spain, with origins tracing to Roman times when a temple to Aesculapius likely stood there, later adapted by Muslim rulers before its 13th-century reconstruction under Alfonso X atop an Arab citadel using Roman materials like columns and gravestones.

This Norman-style keep with panoramic harbor views symbolized Castilian power post-Reconquista, housing the short-lived Order of Santa María de España for naval defense against Muslims, though unfinished due to repopulation challenges and military setbacks. 

Restored as an interpretation center after centuries of ruin—including a stint as a 20th-century park with ducks—it now showcases Cartagena's 3,000-year history from Punic Carthage through Roman, Moorish, and Bourbon naval eras.
