Castillo de la Coracera
San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Spain, Spain
Castillo de la Coracera is a 15th-century fortress built in 1434 by Álvaro de Luna, Constable of Castile and favorite of King John II, located in San Martín de Valdeiglesias within Spain's Community of Madrid.
Originally serving as a hunting lodge and defensive residence overlooking the Sierra de Gredos, it features a prominent square keep tower over 20 meters tall with walls up to 3 meters thick, elevated entrances accessed by ladders or drawbridges, three eastern turrets, and later Renaissance additions like arcaded courtyards blending military and palatial elements.
Declared a Historic-Artistic Monument, it hosted Isabella the Catholic during her proclamation as heiress, functioned as barracks in later wars, and now supports cultural events, exhibitions, and potential wine museum use after recent rehabilitation.
