Castillo de la Peña in Ardales, Málaga province, Andalusia, Spain, crowns a rocky summit at 496 meters overlooking the village and Guadalteba plains, evolving from prehistoric settlements and an Iberian oppidum—possibly hosting a Roman temple—into a pivotal 9th-century Moorish fortress.

Conquered in 883 AD by rebel leader Omar ben Hafsun, who ringed its natural defenses with walls and towers atop a Cordoban outpost, it anchored his Sajrat Fardaris domain against Umayyad forces and later repelled Castilian assaults through the 14th century until Juan II's troops seized it definitively in 1453.

Heavily damaged during the Peninsular War, its evocative ruins—including consolidated walls, the Door of Justice, and a square alcazaba—preserve panoramic vistas as a testament to Ardales' frontier role amid prehistoric axes, cave art, and the Caminito del Rey's nearby gorge.
