Castillo de la Villa de Martos
Martos, Spain, Spain
Castillo de la Villa de Martos is the urban fortress at the heart of Martos in Jaén province, Spain, built during the Islamic period and significantly reinforced in the 14th century by the Order of Calatrava after Ferdinand III's 1228 donation to defend against Granada's repeated assaults.
Positioned atop a hill amid residential buildings, it complemented the higher Peña de Martos castle through connecting walls and watchtowers, forming a dual defensive system for this strategic Reconquista outpost in the Guadalquivir valley.
Though now in ruins with scant remnants like wall bases and access paths improved for visitors, it symbolizes Martos's role as an impregnable Christian bastion until the 16th century.
