Castillo de las Aguzaderas
Spain, Spain
Castillo de las Aguzaderas is a unique 14th-century medieval fortress near El Coronil in Seville province, Spain, uniquely situated in a shallow valley rather than on a hill to protect a vital spring that supplied water for human, livestock, and agricultural needs in the Banda Morisca frontier zone against Granada.
Built by Christians after the Reconquista between 1348-1353 under the Seville Cathedral's ownership and later rebuilt in 1383 by Ruy Pérez de Esquivel, it features a square enclosure with high curtain walls, seven towers including four angular, two semicircular, and a main homage tower, plus a single defended entrance with a ladronera overhang and an inner patio accessing the spring.
Changed hands among nobles and the Church over centuries, it was renovated multiple times before 19th-century abandonment, declared a National Monument in 1927, and now stands as a well-preserved example of Gothic-Mudéjar military architecture open for visits.
