Castillo de Magacela
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Magacela is a medieval fortress of Roman origin located atop a hill in Magacela, Badajoz province, Extremadura, Spain, with significant Almohad Muslim construction in the late 12th century including the prominent Torre del Homenaje.
Reconquered by Christians in 1235 and further strengthened in the 16th century, the site features three enclosures with preserved remains of towers, water cisterns, a Gothic chapel built over a possible mosque, defensive walls, and a graveyard, reflecting layers from prehistoric dolmens to Islamic citadel phases.
Though in a ruinous state with recent maintenance improving access paths and lighting, the complex offers panoramic views and stands as a Bien de Interés Cultural emblematic of La Serena's strategic history.
