Its construction likely began with a 9th-11th century Berber-origin keep tower later enclosed by a double defensive circuit in masonry—one tall inner square enclosure with corner towers and a lower irregular outer ring with seven cubos—reflecting Valladolid school's noble architecture during Rodrigo Alonso Pimentel's era.

Owned by figures like Álvaro de Luna, the Marquis of Villena, and later the House of Alba, it was restored in 2001 and 2008 amid ruins, earning national monument status for its well-preserved strategic form amid Soria's rugged terrain.
