Castillo de Mairena del Alcor
Mairena del Alcor, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Mairena del Alcor, also known as Castillo de la Luna, is a 14th-century fortress in Mairena del Alcor near Seville, Spain, originally built as a defensive stronghold by Pedro Ponce de León after King Alfonso XI granted him the town in 1342.
Evolving through phases of expansion up to the early 16th century with four quadrangular towers, curtain walls, a deep moat, and artillery-adapted features like saeteras, it transitioned from military use to noble residence before partial decay.
Archaeologist Jorge Bonsor restored it in the early 20th century as a museum-home, preserving its Mudéjar-style masonry and offering panoramic views amid olive groves today.
