Castillo de Malamoneda
Spain, Spain
The Castillo de Malamoneda is a 13th-century rectangular fortress located in the rural municipality of Hontanar, southern Toledo province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, at the foot of the Sierra del Puerco where the Cedena River meets the Malamonedilla stream.
Built as a refuge for the now-abandoned village of Malamoneda—repopulated after the Christian Reconquista—it was granted to knight Alfonso Téllez by Alfonso VIII in 1210, sold to Toledo's Archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada in 1226 alongside nearby sites like Dos Hermanas, later held by the Knights Templar, and passed to the Crown under Fernando III before becoming city property until 19th-century disentailment.
Featuring thick 1.5-meter walls without towers or windows, a small semicircular doorway, and an empty interior with beam sockets, it incorporates older Roman-era concrete remnants and now stands abandoned as state property amid ongoing archaeological excavations.
