Castillo de Marchenilla
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Marchenilla is a medieval fortress dating to the 11th-12th centuries during Muslim rule, located near Alcalá de Guadaíra in Seville province, Andalusia, Spain, with later Christian expansions after Ferdinand III's Reconquista.
Granted by Alfonso X in 1253 to Rodrigo Álvarez and further developed in the 14th century, it features a prominent Torre del Homenaje (homage tower), curtain walls, and mixed architectural phases including 17th-century additions like a chapel and farmhouse elements, tied to noble conflicts resolved in the 1474 "Paces de Marchenilla."
Now privately owned within the Gandul archaeological site, this well-preserved castle opens for limited Saturday visits by reservation, overlooking historic landscapes amid Roman and Iberian remnants.
