Castillo de Marcuello
Linás de Marcuello, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Marcuello is an 11th-century medieval fortress dramatically positioned on a rocky spur in the Pre-Pyrenees near Linás de Marcuello and Sarsamarcuello, Huesca province, Aragon, Spain, strategically overlooking the Gállego River and ancient routes toward Jaca.
Likely founded by Sancho Ramírez before 1074 during campaigns against Muslim strongholds like Ayerbe and Bolea, it features a robust square donjon tower—11 meters per side with five levels, saeteras (arrow slits), and fine ashlar masonry—surrounded by a rectangular walled enclosure of irregular masonry possibly dating to the 10th-century Andalusí period.
Passed among nobles like Barbatuerta and Antón de Luna, the site including its Romanesque Virgen del Castillo chapel was abandoned by the late 15th century as villagers relocated downhill, leaving dramatic ruins amid the scenic Hoya de Huesca landscape.
