Built during Muslim occupation for strategic defense, it changed hands repeatedly between Moors and Christians during the Reconquista and underwent reforms in the 16th century.
Today, the ruins atop a hill at about 1,460 feet elevation offer panoramic views and attract hikers exploring its historical remnants amid Extremadura's rugged terrain.
