Castillo de Matrera
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Matrera is a medieval fortress on Cerro Pajarete near Villamartín in Cádiz province, Andalusia, Spain, originally built in the 9th century by rebel leader Omar ibn Hafsún to defend the nearby city of Iptuci during Muslim rule. Conquered by Ferdinand III in the 13th century and rebuilt, it briefly returned to Muslim control before Alfonso XI's definitive 1341 reconquest, facing further sieges in 1408 and 1445 amid the Granada frontier wars. After partial collapse in 2013, a controversial 2015 restoration by architect Carlos Quevedo used lime plaster to recover its original tower volume while distinguishing new from ancient parts, earning national monument status in 1949.
