Castillo de Mayorga (Ruinas)
San Vicente de Alcántara, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Mayorga is a ruined 13th-century medieval fortress of the Order of Alcántara located on a steep hill in the Mayorga estate, about 11-13 km south of San Vicente de Alcántara in Badajoz province, Extremadura, Spain.
Likely of Muslim origin and adapted post-Reconquista, it featured a terrain-adapted rectangular plan with a prominent western Tower of Homage, southern rectangular tower, defensive walls, saeteras, troneras, inner dependencies, and 16th-century improvements before destruction by Portuguese forces in the 17th century during their War of Independence.
The site witnessed border conflicts including Alonso de Monroy's rebellion against the Catholic Monarchs, with preserved southern murallas and esgrafiados amid progressive ruin as a privately held Bien de Interés Cultural.
