Castillo de Medina Sidonia
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Medina-Sidonia is a historic fortress crowning the Cerro del Castillo hilltop in the town of Medina-Sidonia, Cádiz province, Spain. Originally a Roman castellum later adapted by Visigoths and Muslims as an 11th-century alcazar, its current ruins reflect mid-15th-century reconstruction by Enrique de Guzmán, 2nd Duke of Medina-Sidonia, featuring thick ashlar walls, an eastern front with six small rectangular towers, and larger defensive structures on the south flank. Once a key defensive site for the powerful House of Medina-Sidonia, it served as French army headquarters during the early 19th-century Peninsular War before falling into ruin after losing strategic importance post-Reconquista. Today, the site offers panoramic views and remnants blending Roman, Moorish, and Christian architecture, protected as part of a historic ensemble.
