Castillo de Moguer
Moguer, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Moguer is a 14th-century medieval fortress in Moguer, Huelva province, Spain, constructed from mud-based mortar, gravel, clay, and lime atop Roman villa ruins and an earlier Muslim alquería from the Almohad period. Its nearly square plan spans 44 by 45 meters with four corner towers—each 9 by 9 meters featuring two vaulted brick-domed chambers—and was originally encircled by a moat, accessed via a northwest ramp now along Santo Domingo Street. Renovated under the Order of Santiago after the Christian conquest and later serving as prison, warehouse, and bodega until the 1755 Lisbon earthquake damaged it, the well-preserved ruins with 18th-century cellar now host the local tourist office.
