Castillo de Monasterio de Rodilla
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Monasterio de Rodilla is a ruined medieval fortress dating to around 1000 AD, built by Count Gonzalo Rodríguez of Bureba to control vital communication routes through La Bureba region in Burgos province, Castilla y León, Spain.
Part of Castile's frontier defenses after the 1054 Battle of Atapuerca, it passed through Navarrese, royal Castilian, and noble hands before entering the powerful Velasco family's holdings by the late 14th century, with only scant remnants surviving including a pentagonal homage tower adapted to rocky cliffs, a southern wall section with over two-meter-thick irregular stone masonry, amid near-impregnable precipices.
Protected since 1949 as a Spanish cultural asset, these evocative remains perched two kilometers from the village underscore the area's strategic role from Roman times through feudal conflicts along ancient roads and early Camino de Santiago paths.
