Castillo de Montalbán
Spain, Spain
The Castillo de Montalbán is a 13th-century Templar fortress dramatically perched 100 meters above the Torcón River in San Martín de Montalbán, Toledo province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, built atop earlier Roman-Visigothic and Arabic structures.
Donated to the Knights Templar by Alfonso VI after the Reconquista, it boasts formidable defenses including a deep moat, semicircular turret, exterior barbican, pentagonal albarrana towers with pointed arches and mason marks, and thick crenellated walls enclosing remnants of the original Muslim fort and two subterranean cisterns, rendering it impregnably strong without recorded attacks.
Owned by the Duchy of Osuna since the 15th century and declared a historic monument in 1931, the site—listed on Hispania Nostra's Red List for at-risk heritage—features legends of underground tunnels to the nearby Visigothic chapel of María de Melque and is visitable Saturdays with panoramic views.
