Castillo De Montesa
Spain, Spain
Castillo De Montesa is a Gothic-style fortress crowning a hilltop in the town of Montesa, Valencia province, Spain, serving as the historic seat of the Order of Montesa founded in 1317 by King Jaume II after the suppression of the Knights Templar.
Originally of possible Iberian-Roman origin and captured from Muslim control in 1277, the castle features thick walls, sturdy towers, a spacious parade ground for up to 2000 men, and interior structures like a convent, church, maestre's palace, and barracks, blending military strength with monastic functions under the rule of San Benito.
Severely damaged by the 1748 earthquake and later seismic events, its ruins were declared a historic-artistic monument in 1926, with modern restorations preserving the chapter hall amid panoramic views of the region.
