Castillo de Montizón SL
Villamanrique, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Montizón, near Villamanrique in Ciudad Real province, Spain, was rebuilt between 1240-1275 by Pelay Pérez Correa, master of the Order of Santiago, possibly over earlier Muslim remains from the 10th century.
Serving as a frontier stronghold in the Campo de Montiel, it witnessed fierce 15th-century civil conflicts, including a brutal 1465-1467 siege during the Wars of the Castilian Succession between the Manrique family—who held it as a comendadoría, with poet Jorge Manrique later in charge—and rivals like the Constable Lucas de Iranzo.
Abandoned by the 18th century and later altered into a farm by the Marquis of Villamediana, the private ruins preserve a residential-military layout with walls, towers, and ancient storage jars amid the historic Santiago order landscape.
