Castillo de Monzón
Monzón, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Monzón is a vast Templar fortress towering over the town of Monzón in Huesca province, Aragon, Spain, with origins as a 10th-century Muslim stronghold built by the Banu Hud dynasty.
Captured by Sancho Ramírez in 1089 and gifted to the Knights Templar in 1143, it evolved into a fortified convent featuring a square Moorish keep, Romanesque chapel of San Nicolás, chapter house-refectory, dormitories, Jaime I tower, thick walls, cisterns, and underground galleries, where young James I of Aragon resided under Templar protection.
Besieged during the 1309 Templar suppression and later adapted with 18th-century bastions for artillery defense amid conflicts like the War of the Spanish Succession and Carlist Wars, this national monument now includes a Templar interpretive center showcasing its layered military and religious history.
