Castillo de Ocio o de Lanos
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Ocio, also called Castillo de Lanos, is a medieval fortress crowning a dramatic rocky outcrop at 644 meters in Ocio hamlet, Zambrana municipality, Álava province, Basque Country, Spain, guarding the ancient frontier between Navarre and Castile kingdoms.
Likely originating in the 11th-12th century atop Iron Age and late Roman defenses, it features a robust sandstone tower of homage with an attached rectangular building, double concentric walls over 1.5 meters thick, and four cylindrical towers, all blending seamlessly into the natural escarpment nearly impregnable on three sides.
Key to border skirmishes, it fell to Castile under Sancho IV in the 13th century, passed to noble families like the Sarmientos for reforms, and was abandoned by the late 15th century after Álava's integration, now restored as a Cultural Interest Site with sweeping valley views.
