Castillo de Orgaz
Spain, Spain
The Castillo de Orgaz is a late medieval fortress in the town of Orgaz, Toledo province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, constructed in the 14th century by Álvar Pérez de Guzmán atop an earlier 12th-century structure, possibly originating from a 10th-century Arab fortress.
This rectangular castle features a striking 20-meter-high quadrangular keep, protective scaraguaites at its corners instead of traditional towers, crenellated walls with loopholes, and an inner chapel with a semicircular apse, blending military defense with residential elements.
It played roles in key historical events like the War of the Communities, when locals sheltered there until Charles V ordered its burning, and now hosts guided tours, cultural events, and a medieval festival in late May after restorations.
