Castillo de Otíñar
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Otíñar in Jaén province, Spain, near the abandoned village of Otíñar along the road to Quiebrajano, began as a Muslim agricultural settlement with basic earth and wood defenses during al-Andalus rule. Ravaged by Ferdinand III in 1228 during campaigns toward Jaén—possibly referenced as Atorimar in chronicles—it was rebuilt post-1246 Pact of Jaén as a strategic border castle to monitor Granada routes, using smoke signals to Torre Bermeja and Jaén amid Nasrid raids. By the 14th century supporting a populated enclave with its own mayor and church, it lost purpose after Granada's 1492 fall, gradually abandoned until the nearby Santa Cristina hamlet persisted until 1970, leaving rugged ruins on the Valdearazo river hill.
