Castillo de Paso Alto
Santa Cruz, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Paso Alto in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, is a 17th-century fortress constructed around 1625 under commander Francisco de Andía to bolster island defenses, later fortified in 1641 amid the war with Portugal.
Heavily damaged during Robert Blake's 1657 attack yet rebuilt by 1782 under Carlos III, it miraculously withstood Horatio Nelson's 1797 bombardment—with 41 British cannonballs failing to breach it, including one that landed unexploded in its chapel, inspiring a local romería tradition honoring Santo Cristo de Paso Alto.
Used as a prison for pirates and during the Spanish Civil War, the state-owned ruins now lack active use but stand as a testament to Tenerife's resilient coastal fortifications.
