Castillo de Peña del Acero
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Peña del Acero is a medieval fortress located near Mirabel in Cáceres province, Extremadura, Spain, originally part of Plasencia's domain before being donated to Pedro de Zúñiga in 1442.
The Zúñiga family established a mayorazgo there in 1535, gaining the title of Marqués de Mirabel, and positioned it strategically along the nearby Vía de la Plata route for defense during the Reconquista era.
Now in progressive ruins under public ownership, the site exemplifies military architecture from its Muslim and Christian phases, overlooking rural landscapes amid historical frontier conflicts.
