Castillo de Peñalcázar
Spain, Spain
Castillo de Peñalcázar is a remote, abandoned pueblo-fortaleza in the Soria province municipality of La Quiñonería, Spain, at 1,249 meters elevation with origins as a Celtiberian city called Centóbriga, later a Roman settlement and Arab stronghold.
It paid tribute to El Cid after his conquest of nearby Alcocer, forming part of the Camino del Cid route, and endured as a Castilian border outpost against Aragon during the 14th-century Guerra de los Dos Pedros.
Today, only two surviving muralla sections, alcázar remnants, and access gate traces remain amid layered Celtiberian, Roman, and Arab constructions, with stones repurposed for local buildings in a now-deserted landscape.
