Castillo de Peñas Negras
Spain, Spain
The Castillo de Peñas Negras is a small, rugged Muslim fortress of Berber origin perched on a steep rocky outcrop near the Tíscar Sanctuary, about 15 km south of Quesada in Jaén province, Andalusia, Spain.
First mentioned in 876 when Cordoban forces destroyed it during rebellions, the rectangular structure of rough stone masonry with a central black rock serving as a natural keep was conquered by Ferdinand III in 1224, briefly held by Christians under Archbishop Ximénez de Rada, then retaken by Muslims until Pedro the Cruel's 1319 victory, after which a modest rectangular tower was added in the 14th century.
Renowned for its impregnable defenses and legends like Pedro Hidalgo's nighttime climb to slay sleeping sentinels, the well-fortified ruins amid stunning Sierra de Cazorla scenery now attract hikers seeking panoramic views and historical lore.
