Castillo de Puente del Congosto
Puente del Congosto, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Puente del Congosto is a 15th-century fortress overlooking the Tormes River gorge in Puente del Congosto village, Salamanca province, Spain, originally built in the 12th-13th centuries to guard the strategic bridge and route linking Ciudad Rodrigo and Ávila.
Rebuilt around 1393 by Gil González Dávila—who received the manor from Enrique III—and later acquired by the Duke of Alba in 1539 from Emperor Carlos V, it features an irregular hexagonal outer enclosure of rubblework with granite reinforcements, a prominent rectangular keep tower of four floors topped by battlements and machicolations, a secondary attached tower, and a postern gate.
Associated with the Order of Calatrava and hosting royalty like Isabel I and Carlos V as a royal posada, the well-preserved private structure offers stunning external views but remains closed to interior visits, adjacent to the local cemetery.
