Castillo de Rochafría
Beteta, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Rochafría, also known as Rochafrida Castle, overlooks the village of Beteta in Cuenca province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, from a strategic hill at about 1,300 meters above the Guadiela River valley.
Likely of Muslim origin built over earlier Iberian settlements, this 13th-century fortress controlled key routes between Cuenca and Molina de Aragón during the Reconquista, passing through noble families like the Carrillos and Albornozes before major 19th-century reforms under Carlist general Ramón Cabrera.
Its ruins feature a prominent pentagonal keep tower in the courtyard, officer quarters, storerooms, and a preserved pointed arch guard post, damaged in the Carlist Wars yet partially restored in 2018 for panoramic views.
