Castillo de Sabiote
Sabiote, Spain, Spain
Castillo de Sabiote is a Renaissance fortress-palace in Sabiote, Jaén province, Spain, originally a 13th-century Hispano-Muslim citadel rebuilt between 1538 and 1549 by architect Andrés de Vandelvira for Francisco de los Cobos, secretary to Charles V and Philip II. It features a rectangular layout with pentagonal corner towers, angular bastions, and a grand Plateresque portal displaying the founders' coats of arms, blending Italian-inspired military defenses with elegant Renaissance aesthetics overlooking the Guadalimar valley. Looted and partially destroyed by Napoleonic troops, its exterior walls and outline endure as Spain's oldest preserved Renaissance bastion-castle model, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931.
